Rhythm & Blues

A guide to some of the best music biz books.

Just My Soul Responding: Rhythm and Blues, Black Consciousness, and Race Relations
By Brian Ward
Written by a young, English college professor, this hefty but never boring book tells the story of how R&B and the civil rights movement intersected in the 1950s and 1960s and beyond.

Honkers & Shouters: The Golden Years of Rhythm and Blues
By Arnold Shaw
A bit dated as it cuts off in the late 1970s, but still one of the best histories of the genre with interpolated interviews with pioneer figures.

The Death of Rhythm & Blues
By Nelson George
Published in the late 1980s, it remains the best brief introduction to R&B.
