Rock

A guide to some of the best music biz books.

Unsung Heroes of Rock 'n' Roll: The Birth of Rock in the Wild Years Before Elvis
By Nick Tosches
Tosches' prose is great fun to read, and the stories he tells about forgotten musicians will empty your wallet, for you will want to hear their work.

Flowers in the Dustbin: The Rise of Rock and Roll 1947-1977
By James Miller
An idiosyncratic and opinionated but very smart book on rock that you may disagree with, but learn a lot by reading.

Rock and Roll: An Unruly History
By Robert Palmer
Written in the early 1990s to accompany the PBS series on Rock & Roll, it is, like Palmer's Deep Blues, very readable, informative and enjoyable.

The Sound of the City: The Rise of Rock and Roll
By Charlie Gillett
Although it cuts off in the early 1980s, one of the first and still best histories of rock.
