Mike Shinoda - World’s On Fire Lyrics

Don’t think I need to say this
‘Cause you know what’s in my head
“###### up” is an understatement
Can’t wait for this year to end
It all fell apart, don’t know where to start
And everything moves so slow
I can’t get a break, it’s too much to take
But closing my eyes, I know

When the world’s on fire, all I need is you
I don’t always think to say it but it’s true
When I just wanna disappear, you’re the one that keeps me here
The world’s on fire, all I need is you

The riot’s on the horizon
We’re calling each other’s bluff
The smoke’s filling up the skies
And I say we should pack it up
Maybe the blaze will take this away
To ash and to earth below
You tell me to breathe, that you still believe
And, closing my eyes, I know

When the world’s on fire, all I need is you
I don’t always think to say it but it’s true
When I just wanna disappear, you’re the one that keeps me here
The world’s on fire, all I need is you

When the world’s on fire, all I need is you
I don’t always think to say it but it’s true
When I just wanna disappear, you’re the one that keeps me here
The world’s on fire, all I need is you

The world’s on fire, all I need is you
The world’s on fire, all I need is you

I like the ‘summary’ power of the Chorus. It ‘gets to the point’ of what the Verse has ‘set up’ for.

In Verse 1 I’d add the ‘I’ to start Line 1. It’s the pronoun, the ‘actor’ to do the ‘action’ of the verb. It makes a difference in how a listener engages or is ‘hooked’ into the Song, ‘Hook-Factor’.
Line 2, I’d delete ‘Cause as unnecessary.
Line 3, obscenities get bleeped out, on-site and by terrestrial radio, which could pay some bills if they play the Song.

Mike Shinoda - World’s On Fire Lyrics

Don’t think I need to say this (The Singer-Character is established in Line 1. Someone is telling his story.)
‘Cause you know what’s in my head (And a ‘You-Character’ is created in Line 2, making it ‘conversational’, which is a strong Hook-Factor.)
“###### up” is an understatement (This line will be abstract until more lines explain it.)
(I?) Can’t wait for this year to end
It all fell apart, (I?) don’t know where to start
And everything moves so slow (Delete ‘And’?)
I can’t get a break, it’s too much to take
But closing my eyes, I know (Delete ‘But’?)

(The whole Verse 1 is rather abstract, conceptual instead of visual. You may not get listeners this far unless the vocal delivery and Melody have lots of Hook-Factor.)
(The Chorus is strong. The Singer-Character ‘sums up’, and says exactly what was on his mind in everything he was saying in Verse 1.)

When the World’s On Fire, all I need is you (Sincere expression of emotion from Singer-Char. to Love-Interest Character.)
I don’t always think to say it but it’s true
When I just wanna disappear, you’re the one THAT keeps me here (‘that’ or ‘who’?)
The World’s On Fire. All I need is you (Strong second ‘hit’ on THE Hook/title, leaving it as last thing ringing in listeners’ ears.)

The riot’s on the horizon (Here the abstraction is resumed, but it has an element of imagery.)
We’re calling each other’s bluff
The smoke’s filling up the skies (imagery)
And I say we should pack it up (Delete ‘And’?)
Maybe the blaze will take this away (imagery)
To ash and to earth below (imagery)
You tell me to breathe, that you still believe (A direct ‘conversational element.)
And, closing my eyes, I know (Delete ‘And’ as I recommend deleting ‘But’ at the last line of V1.)

(I wonder if exchanging Verse 1 for Verse 2 would work better. You can try it and see what you think.)

When the World’s On Fire, all I need is you
I don’t always think to say it but it’s true
When I just wanna disappear, you’re the one who keeps me here
The World’s On Fire. All I need is you

When the World’s On Fire, all I need is you
I don’t always think to say it but it’s true
When I just wanna disappear, you’re the one who keeps me here
The World’s On Fire, all I need is you

The World’s On Fire, all I need is you
The World’s On Fire, all I need is you
(Maybe one more, ‘The World’s On Fire’)

(It looks like it could be sung and done in under 3 minutes and 30 seconds, so it could be ‘Radio-Friendly’, garnering lots of air-play, and earning Royalties for the Songwriter and Publisher.)

There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? http://www.garyeandrews.com

This is the Linkin Park cut. It’s a good example of a Lyric coming up a notch with the ‘Arrangement’, the instrumental accompaniment, and the Prosody, how the Lyric fits the music.

But it’s a weak Lyric in my opinion. The things it does right aren’t enough to make me want to hear it again or pay to hear again. It’s not one I’d want to cover.

Verse 1 had the effect I expected, not hooking my attention. When the Chorus starts I realize I’ve not been paying attention for the last few lines. The Chorus picks me up again with its change of dynamics, which is what a Chorus should do. But by the end of the Chorus I’m tuning out again. The repeat of the title in the strategic Last Line of the Chorus renews interest.

On https://www.youtube.com/ a long list of linkin park world Songs comes up. Strange.
