Hmmmmm…... Am I the only one who wants to know “WHY” ?

Nup. I would like to know why too. This announcement has come out of the blue. So surprised. I’ve learned a lot on this Forum and met so many neat people. Peter Ripley, can you please tell us why the 101 needs to go?

While curious, I am confident the reason is simply lack of interest in what goes on here. For years now I’ve alerted the spam, once a porn video that popped up on a post by a young girl who announced her age, the offers of fake identification documents, which I reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the sellers of stuff in foreign languages that I had translated and had no idea what the hell they were selling, the more recent predatory gambling and prostitution spam assaults.
If you’ll recall the only Moderator who made an appearance was Mod 2. I assume the other folks listed in the ‘About Us’ link at the bottom of the page lost interest long ago.
Simon Cowell once signed up and came looking through, and perhaps came in ‘lurker’ mode more than once. Many others viewed without joining or joined without posting or commenting. But it just didn’t generate enough activity of interest to people with other matters to focus their attention on.
I enjoyed it as a playground, since I’m an asocial personality and quit trying to meet other people live who were interested in Songwriting. I knew musicians for 40 years who were strictly cover-song performers. A drummer told me he never wondered who wrote the Songs he’d played for decades. Frequently those who did write a Song performed it and the alacrity with which they executed cover Songs was not apparent in their own works, the enunciation of the Lyric failing to convey to me the words in their Song. Often the Song didn’t seem to demonstrate the novice Songwriter had learned anything about Structure, THE Hook, even Hook-Factor, from decades of performing other people’s Songs.
People often ask, ‘Can Songwriting Be Taught?’ The answer may be ‘Yes’ or may be ‘No’. A semantic clarification might be ‘Can Songwriting be Learned’. The answer, again, some ‘Can’ learn; some ‘Can’t’. On more than one occasion I stopped reading a member’s posts because they did not learn. Their Songs had the same flaws pointed out previously, often more than once, to which they objected to the same critique notes. When I’d post these folks often too the opportunity to pick my Song apart, seldom offering anything constructive.
So those are probably other factors in the Moderators losing interest, the site not generating enough traffic to BMI’s other doors, the posts not interesting enough in follow-through terms that art and/or artists were discovered and engaged here, becoming affiliates of BMI’s Performance Rights Organization (Royalty-collecting services).
Most folks endeavoring to find a niche somewhere in music commerce, as artists, functionaries in publishing houses, record labels, marketing, entertainment law, producing, can stay busy all day long at more productive pursuits.
I dropped my ambitions for most things in the actual commercial exploitation of my art years ago. Songwriter101 was just a playground for me, where I finally found people who wanted to talk about their Songwriting. As I said, decades of live brushes with cover Songers revealed little interest in Songwriting. They enjoyed their careers making the small money of playing live, the only ‘driver’ to their shows being their name on the sign out front and the bottles behind the bar. After 40 years they ‘retired’, kept their day jobs, took their Social Security, and played music parties socially.
All that to say the site just doesn’t generate the interest those who ran it seek, and couldn’t afford to waste time here that could be more productive elsewhere. If Mod 2 wants to tell us anything, if BMI wants to tell us anything, I reckon they will. But my curiosity will not kill the cat in me.
I do know that I’ve turned this thing on every day for the last fourteen years, with email and Facebutt and my own website to check on but with my eagerness and expectation most stimulated by Songwriter101. What Songwriter might pop out of the woodwork today with something truly interesting? I wonder if the site will remain accessible to go back through the archives. Guy Trepanier, the Frenchman with the ukelele just dredged one up from years ago (2007) that I remember enjoying. And I remember one Song title that had generated 10,000 views. The Lyric itself was unremarkable so I realized, either the poster had clicked on those views to self-generate those numbers, or just that title was that intriguing to all the lurkers and members who clicked on it. It’s a treasure trove for sure.
Ponder, wonder, face forward, step.

Oh! Peter Ripley answered the access question in his alert of the closure: “Please make sure that your lyrics are backed up, as they will be unavailable after March 31, 2019.”

Now there’s an opportunity for some music university. Give students access to the archives to review and find Songs with merit, or work them to more marketable qualities, get them produced, cut, demo’ed, and to market as a final exam.

Yes! Got ‘em Fran! Wrote ‘em down. Sorry I didn’t respond. It occurred to me I should but I’m a horse’s hind end when it comes to etiquette. I was just looking for how to store them on the computinator archive. I have done some work with you I’m quite proud of, like your “She Devilin’ Queen, Betty Jean” and I still harbor hopes of someday getting you a recording of it. I’m just such a hermit and Luddite I don’t socialize much, which is what it would take for me to get it done. Thank you for taking up the slack in my end of the rope!

Hi Gary, I am so glad you received my (E-mail addresses) and we can stay in touch😎 Yes, we do
have several co-written songs and I have some of them registered with BMI Pro!😎 They are also
posted on Just Plain Folks. I consider you a kind hearted man and very talented!!!😎 Thank you
so much and I appreciate you😥

I have seen one or two people on here from tme to time , who also do website design , unfortunately I cant remember their names , but maybe someone reading this could set up a new site . you could call it ‘‘songwriter102.0’’ or maybe something to do with a phoenix rising from the ashes . I don’t know if anyone would have the time , knowledge or inclination though , coz it must be a hard job here being admin , and having to sort out all the spam constantly being posted
