Stuck in a rut.

I have been performing music now for about ten years and I am at a loss for moving forward in my career.  I have released two independent albums with great response from the local press.  I feel I have my local market well covered and I have toured a good bit in the SouthEast.  I have had trouble finding a record label to show any interest in putting out my material.

Since I am doing everything myself it is important for me to invest my time wisely.  I am considering moving up to NYC to try to get closer to industry.

Where should I put my efforts to get to the next level?  Soliciting record lables, looking for a booking agent, trying to record a better album, endless touring?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Dave:

The biggest thing you should do is work on building your e-mail list. The people who sign up are your best customers for your music and related items.

Second, you’ve been playing for ten years and received good local notice. You might want to hire a publicist and gradually expand your touring area, in turn building your e-mail base.  And make sure that your CD sales are being tracked so that you can help build a story surrounding that.

Without knowing you or the history of who you’ve approached in the business, it’s hard to say why you’ve been overlooked. But you already have a career…it sounds like the area you need help with is telling your own story and getting more attention. That’s where a good publicist can help.

I wouldn’t move to get in anyone’s face, but it certainly would help to network at key industry events around the country. Start with some BMI happenings in the major cities and consider other industry-centric events like SXSW, CMJ or (ahem) the DIY Convention. You never know who you’ll meet and make a connection with and it is a relationship business.

Best,
Bruce
