Publishing

I have my own publishing set up.  My question is I want the other members in our group to set up their own publishing, so they will be responsible for paying their own taxes on the money they collect.  If not, they will be under my publishing and I will be responsible for making sure they get their share of the money, which means I will also be responsible for paying taxes on their money,  based on their percent.  Should I subtract the taxes myself, which would lower their percentage, in order to secure that their taxes are paid as well to cover my tail?

Eric:

I’m a little unclear on your situation, but let me provide some general advice.

Each individual member of your group is responsible for their individual taxes on any income.

If your publishing is a company that collects revenue derived from the exploitation of your joint compositions, the publishing company head can issue everyone involved in the songwriting a form detailing their portion of any income derived from your venture. If they don’t pay the taxes, it’s their problem, not the company’s.

Best,
Bruce
