What can an artist do or what are the artistic directors looking for in the press kit
in order to be considered for an entertainment gig at a folk festival? Or knowing your music is the best it can be, is it still who you know?

I’m not bruce, but I’ll try to answer.

Artistic Directors are looking for originality. That is key to festivals. Obviously you need some background and a good demo. I would recomend getting the Musicians atlas (http://www.musiciansatlas.com/) They have tons of festivals with contact information of the people in charge of booking. Call them directly. You’ll pay good money for that information but it will ultimately be priceless. When you call, introduce yourself, and ask if you can send them a copy of your demo and press kit. If they say no, thank them for their time. If they say yes, OVERNIGHT it to them. And go from there. Again, i’m not Bruce but I hope I helped.

Frankly, I couldn’t disagree more with Nate.

The people in charge of booking most festivals are looking for good music. Period. When you send in a kit, they’re looking to grasp the concept of who you are and what’s you’re about in the shortest possible time. A one-page bio and your CD is all they want.

DO NOT CALL!  I can’t stress that enough. You will only irritate a person who is likely already overwhelmed with press kits and CDs. The U.S. Postal system and other delivery services rarely lose anything. The festival bookers will contact you if they’re interested.

Popular festivals (i.e., the ones worth applying to) don’t have time to field phone calls asking them if they received the package, etc. It’s the fastest route to a rejection that I know of.

Best,

Maybe I should clarify. I don’t mean call after you send the package. I’m saying call and let them know you’r sending it and see if there is a specific person to put it attn: to.

I have never applied for a situation like this and what I’ve written has just been what I’ve read and deducted from the music biz that I’ve been exposed to.

Thank you Bruce, Nate and Moderator 3 . We sometimes seem to forget in the forest of the entertainment industry , it is still about the music.
