I actually NEED that to write. I do almost all of my writing in the biggest, busiest Starbucks in Portland. There’s always a million people yapping, music going overhead, and even live music on the weekends. That constant energy is what gets my pen to the paper. I absolutely can not write lyrics in silence. Music - yes, but not lyrics. The crazier the environment the better.

I need quiet to write as well.  Often, it takes me a long time to get into the zone where the writing comes out naturally.  I find that I have to make time for writing as well as not force it.

Sometimes my muse starts talking and I have to excuse myself from what I’m doing to get the idea down.

I don’t need absolute silence…...but when you’ve got techno music shaking your walls…..it can be very distracting

There’s only two types of noises that will completely prevent me from writing: babies/kids and jazz…

Dude I hate that! Musical concentration is precious. And they’re always blasting something in a different key. It’s madness for my musical brain haha

Noise/music isn’t a problem for me when I write lyrics. Sometimes exactly that is what I need to find new ideas.

But when I write (compose) music I need total silence. It’s awful when you’re close to finalizing your catchy musical hook and all of a sudden someone enters the room and starts asking questions or the phone rings. Afterwards I sit there and think what my killer hook that I had a few moments ago sounded like and it’s gone.

As I write every phrase I write down the song in manuscript both lyrics and notation

Once I have a great HOOK it encourages me to make sure the song is worthy

regardless of the time it takes each one

That’s why I often work backwards after coming up with a great original title

for a Chorus

This is why I compose around Ten songs at a time , that period can take me up to a year

and even longer but this way I can flit from song to song, never tiring of each

one.  Of course some songs dont get finished because the are either scrapped

or kept in the locker for a later date often combing two or more older songs into

one outstanding Song ;    The finished article is what matters , not how you get there

With regards to noise from neighbours , I dont get any because my nearest is

Five Hundred Yards away   He is also a musician , and I have a studio in an adjacent Orchard

I used to hate tuning up a guitar on stage when people were all talking but since i purchased

and Electrical Note checker , its so much easier

I often think up a new melody in Supermarkets and cant wait to get back home to write it all dpwn

peter@....it sounds like you write songs in a very similar way to me . have you always written songs in this manner , or have you evolved this method of song creation over a long period of time ?
