I SO need help with my DAW please

Hello all. A couple days ago, my DAW (Studio One) decided it had had enough and went all snail on me. At first, I could just patiently wait for it to catch up to me, but today, it’s become completely unusable. When I record, I usually keep an eye on the wave form, but today, the wave form was seconds behind my singing. It was totally useless as a guide. Then, I thought I’d do some track selection. What a waste of time that was. It took a full 6 seconds to switch between tracks. It’s pretty much impossible to compare tracks when there’s that much time passed between them not to mention the utter frustration of the thing. So, now my head is completely done in by this and I don’t know what to do.

So far, I’ve done a reboot of the computer and of WiFi, I’ve closed all other apps, I’ve removed old files, I’ve dumped unused tracks, I’ve closed my Dropbox link and shut down my back up disc. None of those acts have made a jot of difference. Is there anyone out there who has had this problem before and knows what I might try next?

Help please.

Are other programs also running slowly, or only your DAW?

Thanks Tony. All I’ve got running in terms of effect is an EQ bus for my vocals. I haven’t gotten to mixing or mastering. Right now what I’m trying to do is select takes for the mix. But, my cpu use is off the charts ridiculous.

Thank you guys. Each of your question suggested other things I might try/explore. I’ve figured it out thanks to y’all.

Ends up that while the project doesn’t seem big (only 20 tracks), I was unpacking my takes to tracks to shortlist them for the mix. I hadn’t removed the tracks after shortlisting so I ended up with 150 tracks (most of which were only one small segment of a rather long song. My DAW was freaking out because I was asking it to do more than it was made for. Duh!

Thanks again.

Nah, it’s just a wickedly hard song to sing. Half the takes were me playing with the vocals to see what would work and what wouldn’t. The other half were for each of the parts. It’s a song that I could never perform live. Stupidly difficult. No breathing space. Stupid writer!

Oh hang on…that was me.

I guess I’m just a glutton for punishment.

Jen, if I were you, I wouldn’t work with that writer again. Between you and me me, she’s nothing but trouble.

You mentioned breathing space. As a non-singer, I’ve had to learn about that myself. Kinda humbling when I’ve crafted lines I really like and then realize they still won’t work. Grrr!!

Yeah, breathing is a necessary evil. It’s sad really.
I always leave breathing room if I’m writing for someone else. When I’m singing it myself though, I can sing what ever I want. Does it matter if I pass out after two repetitions of the chorus??? Does it matter if my abs hurt like I’ve just been to the gym (somewhere I’d never ever ever go btw…yuck, ew, awful in my opinion)? Nope. It doesn’t matter a jot.
So neat that you’re going to be using Studio One. It is a very cool tool. I can honestly say that in 10 months of using it (I was on ProTools before), this thread’s plea for help marked the first time I had any problems with it…and the problem was all my own doing apparently. Good luck with it, Vara. There are others who use it on the Forum so should you need help, I’m sure someone will pipe up. Also, the Presonus website has many useful videos. If you go there, make sure you pick carefully though. Some of the videos are like listening to a foreign language because they’re pitched to more advanced users.
