Running under the light of the moon

Hello my friends.

I am enjoying a collaboration with a composer, Igor Demeter, on this new song. It’s a quirky, X-files sounding tune. Yeah, it’s rather purple (i.e., overdone), but I’m not really caring about that. Just having some fun and blowing off steam.

This is a quick record just to get some feedback. I’ll redo this properly when time allows. Right now, I could use some inspiration on the ending. We had thought that we’d just fade out (and we might still do that), but I wonder if any of you brilliant folks might have a brilliant idea for ending it with more interest than a fade out.

Well, I found heaps of samples, but none that took my fancy. Buuuu-t, your wolves then led me to bats. What about something like this…?

It’s a “bat fly by”  :)

how about giving your voice something to reach for :)
right after “ghost in the room” try A-C-G-F @ 4 beats each, then back
to B-D-G

Holy heebee jeebees Batman, that’s creepy as! I just listened to some vampire sound effects and had to stop. Got the creeps.

I can’t figure out what you’re suggesting with A-C-G-F and B-D-G, Tony. Is it an “ah-ah-ah-ah” you’re thinking of???

I’m not sure that people would recognize the sounds as being bats. It has to be wolves. I could go out my back door after an ambulance has gone by and record the coyotes howling.

It’s fun using samples like this. I did it for the first time in the last song I posted here with tree frogs and crickets. I think it was pretty successful in creating the atmosphere.

It is easily the best thing about the song, to be frank.

I like the track, Jen, and your vocals have just the right amount of spookiness about them. I like the eerie whistle sound too.

just a little melodic change-up to put more stress on “I’m running, running…..under
the light of the moon”....... and opportunity for some dramatic harmony! :)

That is a sweet sample Gav! Outstanding production too! You really seem to have found
your “comfortable” voice, bravo!
I’ve recently recorded a thunder storm here that I could contribute….....

Tony, maybe we should give up this songwriting stuff - it’s too difficult - and just record nature sounds instead. I’m on Hatteras Island at the moment. I’m going to step outside to record the waves on the beach. If the recording includes a thump and a muffled scream, it’s because the wind has blown me off the deck and I’ve landed in the bushes below.

Jen, here’s a coyote call in the public domain. Not quite a wolf, but sounds pretty similar.

And here’s a wolf

And here’s a site with a whole lot of downloadable wolf howls in mp3 format.

Such a nice arrangement, Gavin. Is that you playing the banjo? I love a good banjo. Thanks for sharing that. It gives me some ideas for incorporating sounds into “Running…”

I checked this site out. So many sounds. These samples are far better than the ones I found yesterday. Lots of choice here. I’m going to have a play with it and will post when I’m done. This is going to be fun. Thanks guys.

Hello. So I’m back working on this tune for Igor. I’ve been playing around with howling wolves today. What do y’all think of this ending? Too much? Not enough? Just right? Not right?

Spooky! I take it the fluttering sound is the bats? I’m not sure whether I would have consciously recognized that if I hadn’t been forewarned, but it would still have sounded spooky. I think you should play up the wolf more. It’s only really noticeable right at the end and could be louder there too. Musically, I think it works very well.
