Hello:

I am Joel Fass, mostly known as a guitarist. I lived in NY most of my life and now am in Hatfield, PA. I’d like to post some of my work, hear others’, and possibly collaborate. (I have some lyrics w/o melodies, and would like someone else to write the music for a change. I even started writing a show, after being inspired by A Bronx Tale).

That’s the file folder. I’d like you to pay special attention to the video about and featuring You’re My Foundation—-co-written with the late Jimmy Norman (who wrote lyrics for Time is On My Side, and also wrote with Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix). It was written for the Jazz Foundation of America, a charity that does wonderful things for musicians in crisis. Jimmy, myself, and all the singers on the video are clients.

My other favorite is Not a Bad November, the first ‘real’ song I wrote with lyrics. It’s on my Soundclick page (along with examples of my guitar playing) sung beautifully by Vicki Doney—-with Steve Ash on piano). It’s also live on the 1st set at the Smalls site.

I hope you enjoy the music and that I can make some friends here.

Joel

http://www.smallslive.com (a pay site for the archives, or free, I’m not sure. There are 8 shows, and the most recent, from Jan. 27th, has 2 sets of mostly my songs with 2 singers and a good jazz band. I’m playing guitar)....

Nice to meet you, Joel. I love “You’re My Foundation.” Great song, and a lovely performance too.

Thanks! Neither Jimmy nor myself ever made a dime off it—-but don’t let’s go THERE…

Just curious: which version did you see, the JFA vid or the Smalls version?

The one on YouTube.

I was really proud of that video—-though not invited to participate, and feeling shut out at the time not being invited to the unveiling of the video (in front of big shots who could have helped me, and I was really down and out). Jimmy and I fell out, and I didn’t talk to the JFA CEO for years. I felt they were doing an end run around me and turning it into a Jimmy Norman project—-and I resented it, b/c I brought him the song largely written. (The rest was done in his apartment on the night of Barack Obama’s 1st election—-with Jimmy’s TV blaring the results in the background as we worked. He did a great job with his lyrics [earthier than mine], and arranged the tune in a way I hadn’t, with the chorus up-front). But it says in the bible (not that I read or live by it) ‘Seek another man’s fortune’. Maybe that was my lesson, my ‘parable’.

Well, bad feelings held onto only cause more bad feelings——or worse. I went to Jimmy’s last performance (he died in 2011) and shook his hand like a man, to which he smiled. I made up with Wendy last winter in the elevator at Local 802, Musicians Union in NYC, and all is well. Now it’s time for Jimmy’s heirs and myself to get a hit and some $. Not so easy in the digital age.

I cannot stress enough what angels the JFA are. They have given me and countless other jazz musicians in NY and NO thousands of dollars to pay their rent and prevent evictions, given free medical care, were on the scene rescuing musicians after Katrina. The head social worker, Alisa Hafkin, has kept me afloat for years. Dr. Frank Forte, an amateur jazz guitarist who plays Django Reinhardt CDs in his waiting room, connected me with a urologist who operated on me gratis. Wendy herself worked so hard she made herself sick, and is now on hiatus.

Welcome, Joel, to the campus of Songwriter101.

There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? http://www.garyeandrews.com
