The Future of SoundCloud

Hi guys. A friend directed me to this post about SoundCloud possibly closing down. I don’t know how authentic it is, but I know SC has had some problems over the past few years and this fellow seems genuinely concerned. I’m alarmed….

So many relationships potentially lost. Save your stuff and find out where your favourite collaborators are moving to.

Good advice. There are stories of Songs that found success long after the co-writers have lost touch with one another. Someone misses out on whatever ‘success’ meant, perhaps the hard currency most of us could use at any given time.

There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? http://www.garyeandrews.com

Well, until now it was only reported that their San Francisco office is goin to be closed by end of July and that they might have plans to reduce their stuff by 30 %.

SC is a real cool tool, hope it will stay open. But in the last years many sites and “services” ran out of money and closed their gates. In the end, only google, Microsoft and apple will
be left…

I have been hearing this for a long time. I think it’s maybe part of the reason behind their failure to address the many bugs and technical issues that plague the site. There are alternatives out there, some of which are better in a lot of ways, but of course SoundCloud has the critical mass, which is why I have stuck with it.

Having said that, I upgraded my own site to be able to host mp3 files so that I could always be sure people could hear the latest version of a track instead of some earlier half-baked one, which is what SoundCloud would deliver in certain circumstances.

Interesting. I’ve been reading about it on several news sites too and I’ve seen several reasons given for SoundCloud’s demise. For example, the German media would make it seem as if SoundCloud owners refused to sell to larger companies in order to stay true to themselves, instead opting to let go hundreds of workers. While in North American media, the sentiment is that SoundCloud is not marketable in its current form, so investors aren’t really lining up to come on board, thereby allowing it to fail. It will be interesting to see what will become of it.
