So the song only has 2 chords. I wanted to see how far I could take it. Yeah Tony I already know you’re gonna say to add a bridge, but I didn’t on purpose.

Boy wouldn’t a great vocal just take it to another level. If I only knew someone with a great voice who understood what Wind In The Firebox meant so they could write some powerful lyrics and sing the hell out of it. Hmm.

Ohhh, I laughed so hard. I can’t believe you remember that. Wind in the Firebox! lol

So it’s Gavin you’re after then. Wasn’t he the one who defined WitF for you? Yes. Just checked. About Wind in the Firebox, he said, “I am clinging on to the slim hope that it is a uniquely New Zealand metaphor for something amusingly rude, but I fear it is probably just a reference to Jenny’s way of keeping warm in the winter.”  :)

Nice write John. There’s a lot of variation there for just two chords. To be honest, I don’t think I would have noticed if you hadn’t mentioned it. Impressive. I think you’ve proven that a song doesn’t have to be over the top complex with multiple key changes to work. It suggests a lot of possibilities for melody. Gavin will be spoiled for choice there.  ;)

Hi John,

The demo sounds great! transitioning between the two chords is nice, and rums pops out nicely.
I would probably bring the lead guitar channel at 1:00 and 2:40 more up in the mix, making sure the use filters to leave out the frequencies from other bands (like sub/lows and his-end) alone, also spreading out the stereo image, so you have a chance to boost the volume of it, as you normally lose loudness perception when the image is spread in stereo. cheers!

Actually, I do have an idea. I’m going to run it through my brain while I do yard work today and see if it actually works.

OK, here’s what I came up with.

WIND IN THE FIREBOX

I was sitting in a bar down Auckland way
Got talking with a Kiwi girl
Maybe the beer or maybe her smile
Or both had my mind in a whirl
She said, “It’s mighty cold at home.
Every night I’m chilled to the bone.
I got wind in the firebox
And something has to be done.”

I said
I got wind in the firebox too
And I know just what to do
How about me and you get together
And I’ll clean out your flue?
They say that these Kiwi girls are friendly
I guess they’re not joking
Loud and clear the message she sent, she
Had a fire that needed poking

She took me home and opened the door
We sat next to the fire
She said, “Well what are you waiting for?”
I felt the flames burn higher
But when I leaned over and tried to kiss her
She slapped me upside the head
I said, “Hey, I don’t understand
Honey, I thought you said…

You had wind in the firebox too
Well, I know just what to do
How about me and you get together
And I’ll clean out your flue?”
They say that these Kiwi girls are friendly
I guess they’re not joking
Loud and clear the message she sent, she
Had a fire that needed poking

Now here I am up on the roof
Trying to fix her chimney
How could I have misunderstood
The signs that she was giving me?

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK

I got wind in the firebox too
And I know just what to do
How about me and you get together
And I’ll clean out your flue?
They say that these Kiwi girls are friendly
I guess they’re not joking
Loud and clear the message she sent, she
Had a fire that needed poking

I got no idea about chimneys
I sure don’t know how to fix’em
Honey, if you’re cold, can’t I come down
And we could try a little friction?

(Spoken during fade out)
What’s that you say?
Well, that’s just rude.
Honey, it’s cold up here.
I’m freezing. Come on now.
This ain’t fair.

But when I leaned in to kiss her
My belly began to growl
Those pickled eggs and beer
Were starting to get loud :)

Tony, I didn’t think it was possible for anyone to lower the tone of this lyric still further. I reckoned without you :)

Those pickled eggs and Double Brown beers
Were really starting to howl

I had to consult Google for a New Zealand beer. Jenny will probably tell us it tastes like paint stripper or Miller Lite or some such abomination.

Can’t think of a more romantic setting…... just keep him away from the fire! :)

...and here comes Jen to douse the flames…
Gav, I think what you’ve written is hilarious in a side-splitting kind of way. It’s that classic Gavin Sinclair funny that is along the lines of Bubba and Daisy that I love so much. But I just can’t hear these hilarious words married to John’s cruisy guitar. When I listen to John’s tune, I hear something uplifting or something along the lines of Tony/John’s “The Road Home.”

Jen may be right. John sent me an mp3 to try to make a very rough draft, but it just sounds stupid. Partly this might be because it’s me attempting to sing something that’s beyond me. Partly, it might be that my mic is broken so that it records but I can’t hear myself through it as I sing (it’s a USB mic, and that’s how you monitor your voice). And partly it might be that it sucks.

It absolutely doesn’t suck, Gavin. It’s a clever and funny lyric. I was just musing on its suitability to the music. Now that broken mic of yours…THAT sucks. Buuuut, it sounds like a very good excuse to go shopping. Toys, toys toys, love new toys.  :)
