(Video) We Survived Our First Show

So my band of 4 weeks played our first gig last night and—to my own surprise—I’m still alive. I thought I might hyperventilate for the first few songs, but I calmed down and actually started having fun towards the end. Don’t know how much of that was just having played for a little bit and noticing the sky didn’t fall down when we messed up vs just the fact that we saved our favorite originals for the end so maybe I just like those songs? We definitely made some mistakes and I (the singer in the video) have got some stuff to work on for sure, but at the end of the day I’m really happy with how it all turned out. I think there was about 15 people there when we started and by the time we finished there were about 35 or 40, so I like to think that means we didn’t run people off at least! lol

I said in one of the other forums on here a few weeks ago that I’d post vids of our originals once I had them so here they are! If you’re curious as to which order we played them (maybe you’ll think we sounded better as we got comfortable up there too? Or not. Honesty is much appreciated lol) it was:

When
The Cracks
Dead End
Crazy B*tch

There were covers in between there that I don’t have videos for…oh well.

To make things confusing, I’m gonna post my favorites first, so that if you’re only gonna check out one or two, you’ll check out the ones I’m pretty excited about personally.

More rock than alt or indie I’d say.

Funny thing to notice—our drummer broke his high hat in the middle of this song and just kicked it over lol. We didn’t really have the awareness to notice while it was happening, and I don’t think we even gave him enough time to fix it before the next song, so he comes in late on Crazy B*tch. Poor guy, lol.

Little bit more pop-y if that’s your thing. I’ve had some people tell me this is the one they could hear on the radio.

Me and our lead guitarist wrote this one in December. All three of the others we’ve written in the last month getting ready for this show! I like the melody, I just have a tough time singing so low to be honest.

Sorry for the ridiculously long post, and thanks for all of your guys help and advice before the show! It really did help me—especially with nerves!

Y-E-A-H!!! Way to go Ethan.

Re low notes, I used the technique outlined on wikihow to add 3 semi-tones to my low end…

It took only a few weeks of intermittently working it to get down to a D3 consistently.

Thanks so much for sharing these vids, Ethan. I did wonder how it all went for you. Great job. Really great.

For our next show we’re adding Up Around the Bend by CCR to the setlist lol so that’s pretty funny you mention that!

And also on a similar note, I’m really considering naming our first album ‘Bring Bands Back’ cuz all of the kids my age just listen to rap and DJ’s and sh*t nowadays. I wish I could have been alive during the 60s and 70s man.

Definitely not all kids listen exclusively to DJs etc. Find your local underground scene. There’s usually a pretty vibrant underground scene in most centres. They’re an awesome, tight knit bunch who love live music. I live in small city of 130-odd thousand souls and even here there are a couple clubs/lounge venues that specialize in live music and give indie artists the prime slots. Just get to know your local scene by attending shows. It’s a seriously fun journey.  ;)

You’re right. My town allegedly has a reputation for awesome house shows where people from all over come to play for some reason haha. Hopefully I’ll meet a lot more of those people now

Congrats! Real cool! I certainly would have enjoyed the show, including the unintended interlude of the drummer (that the bass player DID notice BTW) ;-)

Great start.
