They ask some intriguing questions:

A lot has changed in song writing over the last couple years. Melody has become hugely important now in ALL genres!

If you are a melody or track person…

Are you incorporating hooks into your verses in addition to your choruses?

Do you know what line + 3 means? You should, it’s everywhere in music!

Are you putting rhythmic hooks at the ends of each melody line so they match the rhyming hotspots? (Big one!!)

Can you write melody to an existing track and understand how to play off the track elements when you write?

There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? http://www.garyeandrews.com

Melody is always important. That´s why I fail to understand how nowadays songs with just one note in the melody (take Katey Perry) can become such huge hits ....

...every once in a while, I get in the mood or so…and start to play..

WHAT SONG ARE YOU QUOTING by Perry One note in the melody ???

Less is sometimes better but One Note ???  No Way   One note repeated

a lot that’s a different ball game

Telll Me the Song She wrote with one note in the melody ????  I bet it had more

than one chord in the whole song and no way One note

One note means NO HOOK and no contrast between the various sections

in a song ????

I agree with your comment that Melody is important and it has always been that way

one of the most important things is the right vocalist singing the song

Building a “melody” on a single note (repeated, of course) has become a bit of “a thing.” Taylor Swift does it quite a lot. When her new album was reviewed on NPR, the reviewer made a point of how this could be done without it being boring. I’m not sure I’d go that far, maybe just less boring than it sounds, thanks to chord changes beneath the melody and all the production gimmicks that go into one of her songs.

Plenty of others do the same thing, partly because they are crap at writing melodies, and because a boring verse makes an ordinary chorus, when it arrives, appear much more interesting than it really is.

Here’s a BBC article on Taylor Swift and her one-note melodies.
