Hello,

Thanks for the email. The requested content was taken down and a refund is being process into your account. Refunds can take 2-3 business days to appear in your TuneCore balance or PayPal account and 3-5 business days for your credit card. UPC: 859725970194 it appears to fit the criteria that is usually linked to store end streaming abuse. In order to protect you from action stores might take in the future, we have blocked the release and wanted to send you some additional information about streaming abuse before you continue with distribution.

“Store end streaming abuse” is when a store’s fraud review team, in their sole judgment, determine that a particular song or album has been played an abnormally high number of times within a small number of store accounts, oftentimes thousands of streams per account. They further state that these streams can inflate an album’s position within store charts and lower the overall per-stream-value of all albums within the store. As a result, streaming stores such as Spotify, and Google Play consider this a violation of their terms and conditions. Such streaming abuse also leads to significant financial losses for stores.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Best,

I’m not sure I understand… How is streaming abuse even possible if I’ve never released the album?

I love that song!

Why the heck did you go with TuneCore? I just uploaded another song to Amuse for distribution. It’s free and easy with a combination of your phone and DropBox. I did once run into a problem with my song, “All I Want for Christmas is Your Fat A$$ To Be Gone.” I ended up having to label it “explicit,” but that was Apple’s fault not theirs and they worked with me to resolve it. TuneCore’s refusal to tell you why they won’t distribute your song is ridiculous.

What I’d really like to know is if what they’re saying is true! Could some other distributor out there already be making money off my music? How could I possibly find out?

I don’t see how that would be possible, Tony.

I understand your concern, though. I would be livid if someone was muscling in on the $0.57 I have made from sharing my genius on Spotify, Apple, etc.

Did you ever get this resolved,Tony? Or did you just tell TuneCore to take a hike?

I just had a song initially rejected by Amuse, but they explained what the problem was and helped me put it right in no time. They replied to my emails almost instantly and couldn’t have been nicer about it. At least to this point, they seem to be good folks.

I learned something from the experience. They don’t allow any text on the cover beyond the title and artist because the people at Apple, Spotify, etc. will reject it. I knew that, but somehow it didn’t occur to me that it would apply in this case. The artwork, which you can see at the link below, includes an old-fashioned microphone with the words “On the Air” appearing as if lit up on the microphone itself. When I looked at it again, I could see the problem. I just found another microphone without the text and problem solved with no delay to the April 13th release date.

With people having songs with one and two hundred MILLION streams making less than a counter worker at McDonalds, worrying about someone making money off your music, is probably not that big a concern.

Yea, if it was something as simple as cover art I’d be glad to fix it! But all they hinted at was “streaming abuse”, whatever that is, and warned me not to re-submit because then they wouldn’t refund my money! I just hope they don’t think “I’m” the fraud because someone else has already posted my music, or versions of my songs, elsewhere…....

Tony,

I really have no idea what is going on as I have never used any of these services. I don’t know what their definition of “streaming abuse” is, can’t for the life of me even figure out what they are talking about. But a problem we have in all of society is that “abuse” seems to be in the eyes of the beholder. All these companies have weird rules and it is all so complicated. People say things on social network sites and get banned from the sites. They put up “fake news” and now people get offended about anything someone says. It is all in a hypercritical mass and careers are destroyed daily based upon changing definitions. It all leads to very much of a “what’s the point” of trying to do any of this.

If it were me. I’d simply take their warning seriously and get off their site. Find others as Gavin is trying to put up and realize that anything can trigger people. I don’t know what conversations you have had with them but do know that they can take unrelated things and tie them into something you have going on. It could be that they have been triggered by something else and tied that into what you are talking about here.

It’s a lot like language issues on this site. many times some of us will refer to something or use language that is in common usage but get the #### treatment by safeguards here. It might not be anything of a bad nature but a word might be associated with something else. A word that used to have a benign meaning now can mean something controversial and lead to getting censored.

I don’t know if that applies to you here. I couldn’t imagine writing music or something that could be really misconstrued or something that would be prevented from being put on a site. Maybe, as the example Gavin uses, it might need to be labeled “Explicit”
(which I find interesting considering nearly every thing that comes in most Rap songs could be considered “Explicit” and they don’t seem to have a problem finding a forum,) But I know people who have had similar problems. Usually it is something that has roots in other issues. I hope you get it resolved and find an application that will help you.

Good luck.

We will get back to you if we have any questions otherwise we will send it directly to the stores. Either way, you will hear from us within the next few days. Watch out for messages we send you as these can have important information about your release.

MAB, I’m surprised you’re not doing any of this streaming stuff. For folks like me, it’s just for the fun of doing it. You, on the other hand, have a following and might make a little money off it.

Hey Gavin,

You are correct, I probably should. But there are a couple of reasons I really don’t. The first is legal. For the past 20 years I have primarily taught the PROCESS of songwriting, craft of performance, and the inner points of networking. I have written over 3000 songs with around 2800 people worldwide, in everything from my seminars and workshops, private appointments, tours of Nashville and other avenues. Those songs are all TEACHING lessons, with a practical application effect. They have gone on to be involved in other people’s web sites, CD projects, helping them understand the processes that are entailed in all of this. They have also led to publishing deals, pitches, cuts in many ways. With that comes expense. If you can imagine the process of registering, paying for, getting recordings of hundreds and hundreds of songs with almost no way to recoup any of the expense, you begin to see a certain futility in doing that. You would have to be a multi millionaire to be able to even access it which is why the huge conglomerate companies are pretty much the only ones that can exist in today’s market place.

The key to my life is the “light bulb” effect in ‘teaching people to fish’. In doing that, sitting down and getting to know people, their lives, hopes and dreams, and helping them find avenues to better their lives, are what make me exist. Playing another gig, that is forgotten the second it is over, writing another song that very few will ever hear, and to frankly see the goal posts constantly changed into how many streams that it takes to earn a penny gets more and more frustrating with each day. I could never write another song and it wouldn’t bother me in the least. I can do it and do all day long, and many are pretty credibile songs. The sad fact is that it begins to lose any interest to me. I simply forget most of them and move on to the next song or teaching lesson.

So putting songs out there on some streaming platform that you are assured to make virtually nothing, is simply of very little interest to me.

The second part is more of a personal nature. We have seen an entire industry virtually disappear in a couple of decades. We’ve watched increasing numbers of lesser and lesser talented, clueless people invade, and then see a public completely disinterested in music as a whole, simply is the effect of “driving a stake through the heart of any interest in music.” Much of it is like “sleeping with the enemy.” The Internet, computers, cell phones, music sampling, convoluted laws, and streaming have more or less hastened the demise of what we all do. So in some ways, you are contributing to the downfall. It is all there is left, so in some ways you have to do it. In many more ways you just wonder “what is the point?”

Having said all that, I am currently involved in a product of my own which will probably be my last physical CD. Entitled “A LIFE WELL LIVED” it is songs I have written and recorded during my career that I have a special place in my heart for. A few brand new ones and several re-recordings of songs that are my most recorded. The process has been going on for sometime and I am hoping to coincide with my 60th Birthday in July. I am sure I will be streaming some of those, and tying that into things I am doing on FACEBOOK and my YOU TUBE channel which will possibly get some attention.

The point is that really it is my services and knowledge that I am interested in marketing, songs are just another part of what that entails. Very similar in that artist “BRANDING” now is what is central and songs are a increasingly less important. At any rate, I am toward the end of my career, and a lot of this has to do with energy and drive to do any of it. So I’m sure I’ll do some. For the most part, it is just something else that requires you SPENDING money, not MAKING MONEY.

I adore the creative process and can help many people in that arena. I DETEST the business side, and would just as soon most of that just end and be done with it. The time is coming where almost no one will make money off music in any form and I just came to that realization a long time ago. We’ve all seen the Titanic going down. There have just been a few of us in the crows nest for a long time and seen it coming.

I look at it this way…... Music is a gift, it’s free to begin with. If you achieve any recognition at all for trying to do something meaningful with it then….. THAT’S the reward! :)
