Island Girl 63 (was Ready For Love?)

Just a bit of fun to start the week. I’m back to trying to do the humorous stuff. On this one, our guitarist, Dee Sharpe, channels his inner John Evans into a rather nice guitar solo.

All comments and suggestions much appreciated on the lyrics, music or production.

Hello Gav,

Ya know, I really enjoyed this, and the guitar work was pretty good.  I had to listen twice because “Island Girl 63” really caught my attention.  Just thinking “Island Girl (Looking For Love)” might draw a lot more attention - in my twisted mind, I would remember “Island Girl” before “Looking For Love”  Either way, I liked this song, Kudos, Thanks for sharing, good luck and best wishes,

Thanks for listening and commenting, Ron. I think you’re right about the title. In fact, I might go with “Island Girl 63,” hoping that the 63 on the end is intriguing and gets you wondering what the song is about.

I’ve had the basic melody for the chorus spinning around in my head for about 20 years I think, and the “Island Girl” hook is a nod to the fact that I saw it as a reggae song. I never got very far with the lyrics until I had the idea for a song about online dating. I found that I couldn’t really pull off the full-on reggae thing, but kept the back-beat vibe.

I couldn’t pull off reggae either, lyrically or musically, but I love to listen to reggae.  I’m glad you shared this song, loved listening to it.  Best wishes,

Online dating. I suppose it was inevitable. They might be “ready for love” but are they ready for Gavin? Hmm

Love it Gav. Though I absolutely can NOT relate. Like EVER. I think I’d rather pick up a guy at the grocery store than online…though I do know a lot of people who swear it’s da bomb so there must be something in it

That would have to be an opera aria, Tony. Not sure I’m quite there yet.

Uh oh, Jenny! Now half the guys here will want to know what grocery store you go to.

Not sure what to make of it either, but it seems every second commercial on the television is for a dating site. Seemed like it was time someone wrote a song about it.

Seriously? They advertise those sites on the television? I’m stunned…
....and, clearly, out of touch.

It’s mostly the more staid sites for those who are looking for a partner, rather than more casual hook up sites, like TINDR - I’ll leave songs about that one for Kev :)

There’s a bunch of them, some of them quite specific, like ChristianMingle.com, FarmersOnly.com, OurTime.com (for the older crowd), as well as the more general ones like Match.com and EHarmony.com, which can boast one of the most annoying commercials on the telly, complete with the slightly creepily avuncular founder vaunting its pseudo-scientific 29 dimensions of compatibility. I’d have to say, my favorite is the gloriously cheesy FarmersOnly.com, which informs us that city girls just don’t get it and ends with a jingle just about everyone here could sing along to: “You don’t have to be lonely with FarmersOnly.com.”

Maybe you should start your own down there, Jenny. “You and I could be we with Date-a-Kiwi.com”

Oh man! Date-a-kiwi.com! That’s hilarious…and cringe-worthy. So funny
