Such a worthy message. Well done Aadil.

I love the bridge…

Don’t think it’s just another song
But an anthem for which we all long
It’s not written with ink and pen
But with the blood of many, many men

On the first listen I actually heard, “but an outcome for which we all long” (line 2 of the bridge). That works as a lyric too (i.e., peace is an outcome for which we all long) so it doesn’t really matter that I didn’t hear the intended lyric until the second listen.

How are you getting your worthy song out there, Aadil?

Dear Jenny, thanks a lot for your reply. I am glad you liked it. To be honest, I do not know anything about what to do after creating a song i.e. how to get it heard by people. I personally want the Youtube link to go viral because of its message but don’t know the dynamics of music industry at all. If you can help, I will be more than grateful

Happy to help, Aadil. If it’s just about getting the message out there, I’d start with Facebook. On Facebook with a targeted ad (more on that later) you can reach a huge audience very quickly. For instance, with our album announcement, we placed a targeted ad and had 42K views in a week. For a little fish like Evans and Stokes, that’s a lot of hits. The important thing is to make sure you target the ad appropriately. If, for instance, you set the spread of the ad too widely, you will end up with false hits (fake people in a sense) so choose your countries carefully. We, for instance, chose the US (because that’s where we have our most connections) and Egypt (because our recently released album tells the story of Hatshepsut, an ancient Pharaoh of that land). You know if your ad is reaching real people if (a) the names look legitimate (b) the viewers are engaging with the post (i.e., sharing, loving and commenting). If they are not engaging, you’ve either not caught their interest OR you’ve targeted you ad poorly.

If you’re wanting to go the free road and choose to use YouTube as your distribution point, then I’m afraid the road is a slow one. What you need is to create a momentum. Start by reaching out to your own network (like you are doing here at 101). In a short and sweet message that says what you are trying to do, specifically ask for them to kindly listen and share to their own network. That will get you as far as your network is willing to take you. You must specifically ask for the share.

Then, you can start going beyond your own network by searching for people who post on similar themes. Comment on their work in a supportive way, subscribe to their page, share their videos. If you are targeting people who have similar goals, you will find a new virtual network will open up to you. This last point is one that John and I are working at now. So far it’s been pretty great and we are seeing dividends. It is, however, a very slow process.

One thing is for sure, you can not force something to go viral. If you do everything you can to get it out there and it gets picked up by the masses then that’s a beautiful thing. It’s not likely in this day and age, but it would be a wonderful thing to see and I’m definitely cheering you on.

One other thing to consider is the video. YouTube is a visual medium. Without a video image that draws people in and keeps them there, you are seriously reducing your chance of spreading your message.

A video does not have to be an expensive affair. I’ll give you a few examples. The first is for a song John and I wrote called Forgiven. For the video, John searched online for an already made video that would fit our song. He found this lovely video of the dancer, Dorotea. Our song fit perfectly to the dance’s rhythm. John then emailed Duncan (the director) and Dorotea and asked permission to cut up the video to use for our song. They were very supportive. Here it is.

Now Forgiven is a song about God’s forgiveness so we were not surprised at the low numbers of views. Christian metal is a very small market.

This next one is a preview for our second album. For this one, John used publicly available clips from the video game Assassin’s Creed. Note, there is some violence in this one. If you are averse to that sort of thing, switch it off before the 1:00 mark. Just 30 seconds will give you an idea about what we could accomplish with a zero budget.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpwmusYoMbQ&t=45s

Finally, the video for our newest single, Slave, was created with a few close shots of John playing the guitar, mixed in with stock footage of people at work, and a very few clips from a movie about Egypt. To make the images fit together, John made it black and white and put a matt over top to blend the images. This new video has 10K views on Facebook and it’s growing every day versus 400 or so on YouTube (YouTube is slower for sure).

In your case, I’d highly recommend a lyric video (like Slave above) so your message is seen as well as heard.

The main points here are use your network, ask for the share, make the visual catchy because the visual is an important part of the equation and a good video does not need to break the bank (or cost anything for that matter).

I hope that helps. Let me know if you’d like more detail on any of the above. Good luck friend.

Jen

I’ve had another thought. Gavin Sinclair (of 101) has made a few really lovely photographic montages to go with his music. Gavin, if you read this, could you post a sample? That lovely “windy shore” song is the one I was thinking of, but I know the one about your daughter was also lovely.

Dear Jenny, Thank you so much for your detailed and extremely insightful reply. How do you get a Facebook Add and how much it costs?

That really depends on how long you want the campaign to run. Here’s a good blog about facebook ads that should help to get you started:

Your wish is my command, Jenny :)

The “Wild and Windy Shore ” video is here:

It’s all just still pictures, created in Windows Movie Maker.

The one about my daughter is here:
http://mysteriousbeings.com/portfolio/if-ever/
A combination of still pictures and video clips of the moon and clouds.

I did one for “Pretty Smart Sister” too:
http://mysteriousbeings.com/portfolio/pretty-smart-sister/

That last one was fun to do. It’s also a combination of still pictures and video clips. They came from Pixabay.com, where you can find free (and royalty-free) pictures and video clips.

These videos are pretty amateur - but then so is the music :) You might have to wait a few seconds before they start playing, depending on your connection speed.

Fantastic Gavin. You’re a star. Thanks for that. I love the Pretty Smart sister one. Pixababy??? I’ll have to look that one up. So Aadil, you see there are lots of options out there to create a relevant and entertaining video. Having one is essential these days if you want something to get shared around (as you do).

Not so much “from” as “in.” I’m from Scotland, but live in western North Carolina. (Pretty much like in the song LOL). My daughter is about to start her teacher’s qualification at App.

Well then, what a small world! App was a great school before I had to transfer so I’m sure she’ll love it

She graduated today from UNC Chapel Hill, having spent the last two semesters in France and Spain. Mountain life in little old Boone, North Carolina will certainly be something different. :)

Nice! It’s very peaceful and the people are very nice.

We’re probably the same age unless she skipped a grade or anything. I should have graduated a few days ago but I’m a dumbass.
